Be brilliant, play cunning, and discover how to play craps the correct way!

Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Modern craps formed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French moved down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. A good many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he invented the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
