• Become Versed in Craps – Hints and Techniques: The Past of Craps

Be brilliant, play clever, and become versed in craps the proper way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Current craps developed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French moved down south and located refuge in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and across the country. A great many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he created the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
