Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the English, the French moved south and located sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is derived from the name of the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. A good many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. Later, he designed the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
