Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard amid a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and across the nation. A good many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he designed the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
