Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French relocated south and found sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was derived from the term for the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. Most think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he invented the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
