Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps developed from the old English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French moved south and located sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. A great many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he established the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
