Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps come about from the old English game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French relocated down south and discovered refuge in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. A great many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he developed the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
