Be cunning, play smart, and become versed in craps the ideal way!

Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was acquired from the term for the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and all over the nation. Most think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he developed the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
