Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he invented the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
