• Learn to Play Craps – Hints and Schemes: The Past of Craps

Be cunning, play brilliant, and become versed in craps the correct way!

Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is derived from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. A good many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he designed the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
