• Be a Master of Craps – Tips and Schemes: The History of Craps

Be clever, play cunning, and pickup craps the proper way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps developed from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French moved down south and found safety in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. Most think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he created the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
