Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps come about from the ancient English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French moved down south and located sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and all over the nation. A few acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps.
