Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps formed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French headed down south and found sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. A good many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he created the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
