Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French headed down south and found refuge in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the losing throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and all over the nation. Most acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he developed the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
