• Master Craps – Tricks and Techniques: The History of Craps

    [ English ]

Be cunning, play clever, and become versed in craps the proper way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s knights played Hazard during a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French moved south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and across the country. A great many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he developed the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
