Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French moved south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. A few think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he established the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
