Be smart, play cunning, and master craps the right way!
Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Current craps formed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. A great many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he created the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
