• Be a Master of Craps – Pointers and Tactics: The History of Craps

Be cunning, play smart, and master craps the proper way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps come about from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was acquired from the term for the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. A great many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he developed the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
