Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps developed from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French relocated down south and discovered safety in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. A great many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he established the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
