• Pickup Craps – Pointers and Tactics: The Background of Craps

Be smart, play smart, and pickup craps the ideal way!

Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Modern craps evolved from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French moved down south and discovered sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and all over the nation. A great many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he designed the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
