Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about one hundred years old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights played Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French headed south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically.
