Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French moved down south and found sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was acquired from the name of the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and all over the nation. A great many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win.
