• Master Craps – Pointers and Plans: The Past of Craps

Be clever, play brilliant, and pickup craps the correct way!

Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Current craps evolved from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard during a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French moved south and located refuge in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. Many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he invented the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
