Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about 100 years old. Current craps formed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and across the country. A great many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he invented the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
