Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Modern craps come about from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French moved south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. A great many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he designed the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
