• Be a Master of Craps – Tips and Strategies: The Past of Craps

    [ English ]

Be brilliant, play cunning, and pickup craps the proper way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about one hundred years old. Current craps come about from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the English, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is derived from the name of the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. Most consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. Later, he developed the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
