Be smart, play smart, and master craps the ideal way!
Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps come about from the ancient English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French headed down south and found sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. Many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he developed the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
