Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s knights played Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French headed down south and located refuge in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. A good many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he invented the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
