• The Recorded History of Craps

    [ English ]

The history of Craps dates all the way back to a dice game called Hazard, which goes back to Bernard de Mandeville in New Orleans in 1813. Hazard is believed to be a offshoot of Azzahr, meaning ‘the die’ a game enjoyed by Arabs.

The game developed as it traveled from the Arab territories to France and then England. By the early 1700s, cultivated game rules for Hazard had been developed. France started playing the British variation of Hazard and is thought to have been imported to the new world by early French colonizers. In the mid-Eighteenth century, when the British beat the French in British North America, the French colonists moved to Louisiana. Dice were enjoyed on river boats, clubs and wharfs and a streamlined ‘American’ variation of Craps was created. The game headed west and is a well-known game that is played all over the United States and all over the planet.

The name ‘Craps’ is believed to be a French enunciation of the phrase crabs, which means two ones. There are two general kinds of Craps that are bet on-street Craps and bank Craps. Street caps, correctly called since it’s wagered on the streets is where a shooter sets a point and then attempts to acquire that point. The betting is made either for or against the tosser and another player has to cover the bet in order for the dice game to go ahead.

In casino Craps, which is the familiar game, competed in in betting houses, the casino backs the casino game. The participants gamble against the house-the house covers all of the bets of all of the players. Craps used to be a quite loved game but in the last 20 years had split itself and other games, like poker and chemin de fer became more well-known. However, Craps is observing a come back in popularity once again in online casinos and in land based betting houses.
